An artificial sweetening composition comprises a water-soluble cyclamate salt, an ingestible water-soluble saccharine salt and a compatible edible hydrophilic colloid, the composition being such that in its infrared absorption spectra the ratio of the difference between the absorbance at 10.50m and 10.65m , and the difference between 10.27m and 10.65m , is at least 0.4 and/or the ratio of the difference between the absorbance at 13.10m and 12.70m , and the difference between 13.38m and 12.70m , is at least 0.2. The composition is made by evaporating a solution of a mixture of the ingredients by known methods. Suitable solvents are water and water-alcohol mixtures. Hydrophilic colloids specified are polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, polyethylene glycol, poly-N-vinyl-2-oxazolidinone, methyl cellulose, ethyl cellulose, hydroxymethyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, hydroxyproyl methyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, gum arabic, gum acacia, gum tragancanth, locust bean gum, gum karaya, soluble starch, and dextran. |
