Polymers are produced by contacting at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer with a peroxycarbonate ester and an aqueous solution of a salt of dithionous acid. The monomer may be ethylene, styrene, vinyl or vinylidene chloride, divinylbenzene, butadiene, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, methyl or ethyl acrylate, and copolymers may be derived from styrene and vinylidene chloride, acrylonitrile or methyl methacrylate; from styrene, butadiene and acrylonitryl; and from vinyl acetate and vinylidene chloride. The peroxycarbonate ester may be diisopropyl peroxydicarbonate or O,O-tert-butyl O-isopropyl monoperoxycarbonate and the salt may be sodium, potassium or ammonium dithionite. The monomer and the peroxycarbonate ester may be contacted at -35 DEG to +95 DEG C. in an aqueous medium containing the dithionite and an emulsifying agent, e.g. sodium lauryl sulphate whereby an emulsion is formed.
