Organic ammonium fluoroborates with an atomic ratio of boron to fluorine of about 1 : 1 are prepared by mixing 1 mol. of the appropriate ammonium bifluoride with 2 mols. of boric acid with the addition of water and optionally with the addition of an amount of the appropriate amine or quaternary ammonium base in excess of the amount necessary for neutralization of the reaction mixture. In place of the bifluoride, the monofluoride or a mixture of hydrogen fluoride and the appropriate amine or quaternary ammonium hydroxide may be used.ALSO:Ammonium fluoroborates with an atomic ratio of boron to fluorine of about 1: 1 are prepared by mixing 1 mol. of ammonium bifluoride with 2 mols. of boric acid with the addition of water and optionally with the addition of an amount of ammonia in excess of the amount necessary for neutralization of the reaction mixture. In place of the ammonium bifluoride, ammonium fluoride, or mixtures of ammonia and hydrogen fluoride may be used.ALSO:Wood and wood-containing materials are protected against fire by treatment with aqueous solutions of ammonium fluoroborates with an atomic ratio of boron to fluorine of about 1:1. Urea and ammonium sulphate may also be present.ALSO:Fungicidal and insecticidal compositions for use on wood and wood-containing materials comprise aqueous solutions of ammonium fluoroborates with an atomic ratio of boron to fluorine of about 1 : 1, prepared by mixing 1 mol of ammonium bifluoride or 1 mol of the bifluoride of an appropriate organic amine or quaternary ammonium base with 2 mols of boric acid with the addition of water and optionally with the addition of an amount of ammonia and/or the appropriate amine or quaternary ammonium compound in excess of the amount necessary for neutralization of the reaction mixture, or in place of the bifluoride, there may be used the monofluoride or mixtures of hydrogen fluoride with ammonia or the appropriate amine or quaternary ammonium base. The compositions may optionally contain urea and/or fireproofing agents, e.g. ammonium sulphate. |
