A method for the production of a hollow body (such as a beer barrel) having a wall thickness of at least one millimetre and formed from aluminium alloy that is not plated or brightened includes the step of providing the inside and, if desired, the outside of the body with an elastic oxide layer of a thickness of less than 2m produced anodically on to which a lacquer layer is applied and stoved. The body may be pre-treated by pickling as in the parent Specification and the lacquer may be the same as in that Specification (i.e. one based on an epoxy resin).
