The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method of detecting a sync pattern. The method includes the steps: creating a plurality of windows by dividing a data stream by a preset unit length and arranging the windows in parallel to each other to form a matrix; performing a transform process of sequentially dividing a bitstream of the window by 4 bits and converting the bitstream in a hexadecimal format; repeating the transform process by shifting the window by one bit; counting a repetition frequency of a plurality of sequences, which is created by grouping the transformed hexadecimal numbers by a preset digit number, within a plurality of windows; marking a position of a sequence having the repetition frequency exceeding a preset threshold value by a predetermined marker; deducing straight lines having the same slope, which connect markers to each other based on the positions of the markers marked on the matrix; and detecting a sync pattern based on the bitstream of the window matched with the marker on the straight line. The periodicity of a received data stream is detected by making the data stream in the form of an image even when a frame length, a position of the sync pattern, and a length of the sync pattern are not given, so that the sync pattern can be detected.
