The method involves determining a mass of fresh air by solving a system of equations including an expression of an allowed mass of fresh air at end of an introduction phase based on a total mass of a gaseous mixture present in a cylinder (2), another expression of the fresh air mass through an inlet of a valve (10), and a temperature of the mixture at end of the introduction phase. The allowed mass of the fresh air at the end of the introduction phase is determined based on a pressure during closing the inlet of the valve, and a volume of a combustion chamber (8) for closing the inlet. An independent claim is also included for a controller.
