<p>The method involves heating a flat face (2) of a piece (1) of oak wood using a heat source (5) e.g. infrared lamp, heating strip and flash lamp. A thermal sensor (4) is used for measuring an amount of energy emitted, by infrared radiation, by the heated flat face in a thermal detection zone (3) of the sensor to obtain thermal mapping of the flat face. Parameters such as number of rings per unit length, distribution of width of the rings, average ring width, and inclination of the rings, are determined from the thermal mapping of the face of the wood piece. An independent claim is also included for a machine for measuring rings of a piece of wood.</p> |
