A scanning tunneling microscope comprises: a probe; a control unit which controls the distance between the probe and a sample; a voltage imparting unit which imparts a DC voltage between the probe and the sample; a measurement unit which measures a tunneling current which flows between the probe and the sample by the DC voltage; an extraction unit which extracts as an observation value a specified frequency component among instantaneous values of the tunneling current which is measured by the measurement unit; and an observation information generation unit which, on the basis of the observation value which is extracted by the extraction unit, generates observation information which includes information relating to a chemical state of the surface of the sample and/or the internal structure thereof.
