A rotary chuck (10 includes a housing (12) for rotation about an axis (A), keyways (20) in the housing (12) which extend radially away from the axis (A), jaw assemblies (14) slidably received in the keyways (20) and an actuatuing mechanism as well as a speed ring (26) for moving the jaw assemblies (14) along the keyways (20) in accordance with different gear ratios. Each jaw assembly (14) includes an inner jaw (16) keyed to the associated keyway (20a) adjacent to the bottom thereof and an outer jaw (18) keyed to the associated keyway (20b) near a mouth thereof so that the jaws (16,18) can slide independently along their respective keyways (20a, 20b). Each jaw assembly (14) also has a locking device for locking its jaws (16,18) together when they are opposite one another to prevent their relative radial movement and means enabling release of the locking device from the outside to permit ready removal of the outer jaw (18) from its keyway (20b). |
