A vehicle movement direction detection device comprises: cameras (10) which are installed in the front face and/or the rear face of a vehicle, and which photograph straight ahead from the installed locations thereof; a line setting unit which sets, in photographed images which are photographed by the cameras, detection lines (Ln) in the left-right direction; a reference point setting unit which, in regions which are further left than the center of the photographed images, sets, as left reference points (Ls), points in the detection lines which have a specified brightness, and which, in regions which are further right than the center of the photographed images, sets, as right reference points (Rs), points in the detection lines which have a specified brightness; and a detection unit which detects a movement direction of the vehicle on the basis of changes in location of the left reference points and the right reference points upon the detection lines. |
