Provided is an image display device capable of relaxing restrictions on the installation position of a light source unit and capable of image display, background transmittance, and black display that are appropriate for observers positioned on both sides of a panel contributing to image display. The image display device comprises, arranged in order, a front CF-less liquid crystal panel (50a), a first light guide plate (73a), a PDLC panel (60), a rear CF-less liquid crystal panel (50b), and a light source unit (71) for light guide plates. During image display, the PDLC panel (60) is in a spreading state in which the light source light emitted from the light source unit (71) for light guide plates is guided to the first light guide plate (73a) and is irradiated on the PDLC panel (60). The light source light spread by the PDLC panel (60) is irradiated on the front CF-less liquid crystal panel (50a) and the rear CF-less liquid crystal panel (50b). During non-display of images, the PDLC panel (60) is in a transmitting state and transmits background light. |
