Provided is an image display device capable of relaxing restrictions on the installation position of a light source unit and capable of background transmittance and black display. The image display device comprises a CF liquid crystal panel (50), a PDLC panel (60), and a first PDLC light source unit (70a). A PDLC panel (60) is positioned on the rear surface of the CF liquid crystal panel (50). During image display, the PDLC panel (60) is in a spreading state in which the light source light from the first PDLC light source unit (70a) is spread by the PDLC panel (60) and emitted onto the CF liquid crystal panel (50), and the background light is spread by the PDLC panel (60). During non-display of images, the PDLC panel (60) is in a transmitting state in which the background light is transmitted through the PDLC panel (60) and reaches the CF liquid crystal panel (50). |
