PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attach a cover to a housing securely with easy work and improve the attachment strength of the cover to the housing.SOLUTION: A damping force adjustment type shock absorber includes: a first cover 22 for covering a lock nut 19 of a housing 17 which extends to the exterior of an outer cylinder 2 and houses a damping force adjustment mechanism 20; and a second cover 28 which covers an outer periphery of the first cover 22 and engages with an engagement part 19D of the lock nut 19 thereby holding the first cover 22 in a fixed state. Thus, the first cover 22 can cover the damping force adjustment mechanism 20 and protects the damping force adjustment mechanism 20 from scattering stones or the like during driving. Meanwhile, the first cover 22 is maintained in the fixed state to the housing 17 without using bolts or the like only by engaging an engagement claw part 28D of the second cover 28 with the engagement part 19D of the lock nut 19.
