PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic resonance imaging apparatus capable of selecting a high SNR signal from a plurality of signals regardless of an installation direction of an RF coil unit.SOLUTION: The magnetic resonance imaging apparatus according to one embodiment includes: coil assemblies in which a plurality of coil elements are disposed in a direction orthogonal to a static magnetic field, and that generate a plurality of composite signals different from outputs of the coil elements, and output the plurality of generated composite signals from each of a plurality of output ports; an RF coil unit configured by disposing the plurality of coil assemblies in the direction of the static magnetic field; direction detection means that detects an installation direction of the RF coil unit with respect to the direction of the static magnetic field; a selection unit that selects a desired output port from the plurality of output ports according to the detected installation direction of the RF coil unit; and an image generation unit that generates a magnetic resonance image using a signal output from the selected output port.
