This invention relates to methods for collecting and processing specimens for diagnostic testing. Microorganisms and other cells are captured and enriched from liquid samples such as stomached/liquid food, urine, sputum, blood culture media, and blood, thereby enabling early detection of infections at the point of care. The method of the invention involves adding thrombin and fibrinogen to a biological sample that may contain cells including pathogens. After incubation, the sample becomes a homogenous gel. Brief agitation re-liquefies the sample, except for a very small portion that becomes a pellet which captures the cells. The pellet may then be enzymatically dissolved, resulting in a substantial percentage of the cells being captured in approximately 1/100th of the original sample, but without many of the original sample impurities. |
