PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To maintain a VTC angle suitable for starting even when cam torque is applied at start of an engine.SOLUTION: In response to an engine start operation, a VTC angle &thetas;is read from a VTC angle sensor for detecting a valve timing change angle by a VTC (S21), and an absolute value of a difference between a previously detected VTC angle &thetas;and the VTC angle &thetas;detected this time is calculated as an angle variation &Dgr; (S22). When the angle variation &Dgr; exceeds a predetermined value (S23), it is determined that the engine has started before detection of rotation of a crank shaft and operation amount corresponding to a deviation between the VTC angle &thetas;and a target angle is output to the VTC (S24). Thus, before feedback control of the VTC is performed in accordance with a rotating angle of the crank shaft and a rotating angle of a cam shaft, control of the VTC is started. As a result, the VTC angle suitable for starting of the engine can be maintained. |
