In a regenerative furnace having at least one pair of thermal regenerators 24, 26 and a reversing valve 34 which alternately connects the cold ends of the regenerators to a supply of cold air 28 and to an exhaust flue 32, the furnace has two, or two sets of, combustion air inlets 12, 14 each of which is provided with a burner 16, 18 respectively, which is continuously supplied with fuel, and a separate exhaust gas outlet 52 for combustion products and additional valving means, operated simultaneously with the valve 34, which are provided to connect the hot end of the regenerator which for the time being is heating air, with the combustion air inlets 12, 14 of the furnace and the hot end of the other regenerator with the exhaust gas outlet of the furnace chamber. In the embodiment shown, the additional reversing valve means comprises two three-port valves 48, 50; one of which connects the exhaust gas outlet 52 alternately to the regenerator 24 via the pipe 40, and to the regenerator 26 via the pipe 42; and the second, 50, which connects that regenerator which is not connected to the exhaust gas outlet 52, to both air inlets 12, 14 of the furnace via pipes 40, 44 or 42, 46 and pipes 54, 56, 58. Embodiments are also shown wheein the valves 48, 50 are replaced by four two-port valves (Fig. 2, not shown), or by one four-port valve (Fig. 3, not shown), suitably positioned in the circuit.
