The method involves controlling speed of a vehicle in response to detected distance from a preceding vehicle (2). Indication of impending reduction in speed is output to a driver of the vehicle when the vehicle is approached to the preceding vehicle before automatic reduction of the speed of the vehicle. Outputting of a message and initiation of automatic reduction of the speed are performed in different time when side adjacent to vehicle sufficing is available for an overtaking maneuver.
