1,045,844. Change-speed gear. W. S. HOOVER. May 20, 1965 [June 11, 1964], No. 21495/65. Headings F2D and F2L. A variable-speed vehicle transmission comprises an expanding-wheel gear in series with a three-element reversing planetary gear unit, the latter being controlled by a friction clutch operated by the vehicle foot brake. A V- pulley 20 on the output shaft 22 is driven by a similar pulley incorporating a centrifugal clutch 26, Fig. 1 (not shown), and a powder or like clutch 17 which may be of the type described in Specification 815,416. The driven pulley members 42, 52 are connected by drive pins 53 and loaded by a spring 55, the member 42 being formed with an integral ring gear 60 for the planetary unit, which also comprises a sun pinion 62 on shaft 22 and planet pinions 64 on pins 70 mounted on a carrier 66. Normally the unit is locked solid for forward drive by a clutch ring 74, 75 pressed against pulley member 42 by springs 86 on pins 76 passing through carrier 66. For reverse drive the brake pedal 93, Fig. 2 (not shown), is depressed to cause brake elements 98 to hold a disc 24 capable of lost motion in relation to the planet carrier 66, whereby members 90 on pins 76 engage cam portions 92 of disc 24, Fig. 5 (not shown), to release clutch 74, 75 and render the planetary gear effective, the carrier 66 being held stationary by the disc 24. |
