A device and method for detecting presence of a surge protection on a digital subscriber line

In order to detect the presence of a surge protection (103) on a Digital Subscriber Line (105), channel transfer function data (301; 302) are collected for that Digital Subscriber Line (105). From these channel transfer function data (301; 302), the measured attenuation versus square-root of frequency is computed (401; 402; 502; 602). From the measured attenuation versus square-root of frequency (502; 602) an expected attenuation versus square-root of frequency (501; 601) is computed through linear regression. When the measured attenuation versus square-root of frequency (502; 602) differs from the expected attenuation versus square-root of frequency (501; 601) to an extent exceeding a predefined threshold, presence of a surge protection (103) on the Digital Subscriber Line (105) is reported.
