A display comprises an array of display pixels 42R, 42B, 42G, in which light sensing (photosensing, e.g. CCD) pixels 52R, 52G, 52B are interspersed with the display pixels substantially across the area of the display. Various integral display and image capture pixel arrangements are disclosed Figures 3A-4C and a sensor sub-pixel of one RGB colour may be positioned between display sub-pixels of the two other (RGB) colours: Figure 4C. Microlenses may be positioned over light detecting pixels. To avoid light leakage (shield crosstalk), a portion of non-sensing and non-emitting pixel surface area 44 may be arranged to reduce passage of light across the combined pixel surface, light sensing pixels may be recessed, or sensing and display pixels may be switched on and off alternately. A portable electronic device comprising this combined display-image sensor is then operable to capture an image from the light sensing pixels, so that it can operate as a digital mirror, scanner, biometric access validation (e.g. via a users finger) or touch panel; and when a user looks at the display for a video call, the captured image of the user appears to look directly at the other party.
|
