PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for aseismically reinforcing existing manholes, capable of easily reinforcing the existing manholes whose sidewalls and a sewerage pipe are rigidly connected against earthquakes without digging up the manholes and the main sewerage pipes from the underground or backfilling them. SOLUTION: The existing manhole is modified to an earthquake resistant manhole A as follows: in the existing manhole, in which the main sewerage pipe 2 is rigidly connected to the sidewall hole 10 of the manhole sidewall 11, the base of the main sewerage pipe 2 of the rigidly connected part is removed leaving a part around an outer wall of the manhole; a substitution pipe 4, to the outer periphery of the base of which an earthquake resistant joint 3 is attached, is inserted tip first from the inside of the manhole body 1 to the inside of the main sewerage pipe 2; and the side of an inner wall of the manhole of a storage space 12, in which the earthquake resistant joint 3 is stored, is filled with a manhole filler m from the inside of the manhole body 1. This method does not require a large scale cutting machine, and since the inside of the manhole body 1 is not communicated with the ground, underground water or soil does not flow into the manhole body 1.
