PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a copolymer latex and a paper coating composition having excellent coating operability in the case of producing a coated paper and giving a coated paper exhibiting high strength in printing. SOLUTION: The copolymer latex is produced from different monomer compositions by at least three polymerization stages comprising the first stage to polymerize, based on 100 wt.% of total monomers, 13-34 wt.% in total of monomers comprising 1.5-24 wt.% of an aliphatic conjugated diene monomer, 5.1-25 wt.% of vinyl cyanide monomer, 4.1-20 wt.% of an ethylenic unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer and 0-23.3 wt.% of other monomers copolymerizable with the above monomers, and the second and following stages to polymerize 66-87 wt.% in total of monomers comprising 10-60 wt.% of the aliphatic conjugated diene monomer, 5-30 wt.% of vinyl cyanide monomer, 0-13 wt.% of the ethylenic unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer and 0-72 wt.% of other monomers copolymerizable with the monomers.
