Film carriers for optical or acoustic purposes (e.g. optical or magnetic sound film carriers) are made by applying at least the carrier substance by electrostatic spraying on to a smooth base and stripping it therefrom when dry. The carrier substance (e.g. celluloid or acetyl cellulose) may be applied dissolved in a highboiling solvent, excess of solvent being preferred, so as to produce a uniform surface of great smoothness. A metal strip may be used in known manner as base, electrically-charged for the spray process. The material to be applied by spraying may be electrostatically charged, e.g. by means of known spray electrodes, before spraying, and the material which is to be coated by subjection to spraying may be passed over a flat electrode or laid on such an electrode and sprayed. Spraying may be carried out continuously. Details are given of the application of the process to the preparation of materials for use in colour photography. (see Group XX).
|
