Dec. 9, 1964 [Dec. 10, 1963], No. 50136/64. Headings F4A, F4B, F4J and F4X. A gas offtake hood 2, for a Kaldo or like converter 1, is mounted for pivoting about a horizontal axis 3 to remain operationally connected to a following waste-gas cooling and dust removal plant 6 in every pivotal position. The hood 2 is evaporation cooled, its upper part being surrounded by an evaporating drum 12, mounted centrically or eccentrically on the axis 3 rigidly connected to the hood 2, the water inlet and steam outlet pipes 13 passing along the pivotal axis 3 through stuffing box sealing means. Track rings 4 supported on rollers surround the hood which is connected to the following plant 6 by labyrinth seals. Pivoting, aided by counterweight 15, is by electromechanical, pneumatic or hydraulic means. Alternatively the hood may be of a doublewalled construction, cooled by water circulation, all supply and outlet pipes lying on the pivotal axis. The hood 2 may be swung over ladle 11 during tapping to remove the fumes evolved, and when withdrawn to its extreme position (shown in dashed lines) permits the vertical withdrawal of an associated lance 8 by a mechanical or electro-mechanical travelling winch 9. A cover 10 is then used to prevent slag dropping out.</p> |
