A microscope stage comprises at least two plate members having substantially flat surfaces arranged face to face, one member being arranged for movement relative to the other across the face thereof, and permanent magnet means for urging the two members towards each other. A bottom plate 11 is secured to the microscope stand and a middle plate 12 is arranged to slide on a guide rail 14 attached to the upper face of the plate 11. A further bearing is provided by a projection 19 which abuts a strip 18 on the lower plate 11. Relative movement between the plates 11 and 12 is effected by means of a rail 25 secured at one end to the plate 11 and urged by a spring 35, through a roller 34, against a wheel 26 which is formed as one end of a shaft 27, this shaft being journalled in an extension of the plate 12. Permanent magnets 21, 22, 23 in the lower surface of the middle plate 12 urge the plate 11, which is constructed of ferromagnetic material, towards the plate 12. A top plate 10 carries two fingers 7 for positioning a specimen slide 9 over apertures in the plates 11 and 12 and is also magnetically urged towards the plate 12. The plate 10 is arranged to slide across the plate 12 in a direction perpendicular to the direction of movement of the plate 12 across the plate 11. This relative movement between the plates 10 and 12 is effected by means of a ring 43 which frictionally engages a groove in a block 39 carried by the plate 10. A shaft 47, journalled within the shaft 27, carries a pulley 46 which engages the ring 43 whereby rotation of the shaft 47 causes the plate 10 to slide across the plate 12. |
