The wire rope, Fig. 1 (not shown) comprises a centre core of three stranded filaments 5 of equal diameter, the core being surrounded by three larger elements 6 each of the same diameter and fitting in the valleys between said core filaments 5, and three further elements 7 each of the same diameter fitting within the spacer between the elements 6. Each element 7 is smaller than an element 6 but larger than a core filament 5. All the outer elements may be stranded filaments or only three may be stranded filaments, the other three being single filaments. One or more of the filaments or elements may have metallic or non-metallic coatings and a metallic or non-metallic element may be wound helically around the whole assembly.
