As catalysts in the manufacture of alkylphenols by reacting a phenol, having at least two free nuclear hydrogen atoms, with a mono-olefin having up to 5 carbon atoms, use is made of compounds of either of the formulae AIR(X)2 or Al(R)2X, in which R is an alkyl group of 1-4 carbon atoms and X is halogen. Specified catalysts are diethyl aluminium chloride, ethyl aluminium dichloride, diisobutyl aluminium chloride, isobutyl aluminium dichloride, ethyl diiodoaluminium and diethyl iodoaluminium. Complex compounds derivable from compounds of either of the above formulae may also be used, e.g. ethyl aluminium sesquichloride or methyl aluminium sesquichloride or bromide. The reaction is effected at 100-200 DEG C., under a pressure of 100-5000 p.s.i.g. and in the presence or absence of a solvent, e.g. a long-chain paraffin hydrocarbon. The process may be effected batchwise or continuously, and several methods of procedure are indicated. Examples are given of the reaction of phenol with isobutylene in the presence of diisobutyl aluminium chloride to yield 2,6-di-tert.-butylphenol as the main product with minor proportions of 2-tert.-butylphenol, 2.4-di-tert.-butylphenol and 2,4,6-tri-tert.-butylphenol. Other examples describe the manufacture of (1) 2,6-diethylphenol from phenol and ethylene, (2) 2-tert.-butylnaphthol-1 from naphthol-1 and isobutylene, (3) 2-methyl-6 - tert. - butylphenol from o - cresol and isobutylene, (4) 2,6 - di - tert. - butyl - 4 - methylphenol from p-cresol and isobutylene, and (5) 2,5-di-tert.-butylhydroquinone from hydroquinone and isobutylene. Other specified products are 3 - methyl - 2,6 - diethylphenol, 3 - methyl-2,6 - diisopropylphenol, 2 - ethyl - 6 - tert.-butylphenol, 2 - isopropylnaphthol - 1 and 2.5 - diisopropylhydroquinone.
