<p>Halothane (2,2,2-trifluoro-1-chloro-1-bromoethane), containing as impurity one or more compounds of the formula CF3CX=CYCF3, where X is H, Br or Cl and Y is Br or Cl, is purified by intimately contacting it in the liquid phase with AlCl3, AlBr3 or SbCl5. Granular or powdered AlBr3 or AlCl3, or liquid SbCl5 may be used. Alternatively the AlBr3 may be generated in situ by adding Al powder to impure halothane which also contains bromine.</p> |
