Liquid crystal display apparatus without alignment films and method of manufacturing it

A liquid crystal display (300) is provided that includes a first base substrate (311) including a first surface, a second base substrate (321) including a second surface, a liquid crystal layer (330) including liquid crystal molecules positioned between the first and second base substrates, a first electrode (323) positioned on the second surface and including a plurality of substantially parallel grooves (323') extending in a first direction on a surface facing the first base substrate (311), a second electrode (312) positioned on the first surface or on the second surface, wherein the plurality of grooves (323') on the first electrode (323) is configured to align the liquid crystal molecules in a preset direction when an electrical field is applied between the first electrode (323) and the second electrode (312) so as to establish a voltage difference. The use of grooves on the first electrode to align the liquid crystal molecules makes alignment films unnecessary and allows reducing the thickness of the liquid crystal display.
