A receiver, e.g. video camera (152, 156), determines vehicle (e.g. car, truck) status by receiving a visual image of a status display, e.g. dashboard of instruments (100), and an image processor (154) configured to identify telemetry signal(s) from the image and provide an output in accordance with the signal(s). The processor may identify the camera position relative to the display based on the image, and may identify the vehicle type based on the display features, e.g. based on a signals / templates comparison. The signals may comprise a shape, symbol, symbol location, feature orientation, illumination intensity or text, and may indicate fuel level, battery status, total or trip odometer reading, speed, turn signal or warning or head light status, gear selection, brake or acceleration/deceleration or engine status, engine revolutions, time, date, oil level, air conditioning or media centre or service status of the vehicle. The output may be relayed to a remote device. A location determining unit may provide a location stamp associated with the signals, and the output may further comprise a time stamp associated with the signals. Different telemetry signals (DATA1, DATA2) may be sampled at different rates. |
