A fibrous composition is made by mixing the sodium salt of one or more of polyacrylic acid, alginic acid and cellulose-glycollic acid with a latex of a rubber and with fibrous material, and then adding a water-soluble salt of a multivalent metal to coagulate the mixture. The rubber may be a styrene-butadiene copolymer, an acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymer, polychloroprene or natural rubber. The fibres may be a cellulosic pulp e.g. kraft pulp, sulphate pulp or regenerated cellulose, synthetic fibres such as polyvinyl alcohol, polyamide or polyester, leather scrap or asbestos. The coagulant may be alum, sodium aliminate, zinc sulphate, magnesium chloride, calcium chloride or calcium nitrate. The coagulated mixture is made into paper or shaped articles by conventional methods. The products can be used as wrapping paper, printing paper, gasket materials, insulating materials, map paper, board, wallpaper, or artificial leather. In one example, the slurry contains portland cement as well as asbestos fibres, styrene-butadiene copolymer and sodium cellulose-glycollate, which is coagulated with alum. |
