<p>A method for providing authenticated operation of a first portable or hand-held data processing device (such as a smart phone) comprises; sending a request for an authentication message from the first device to a second portable data processing device; generating and presenting a coded authentication message by the second device; receiving and decoding the authentication message at said first device; inspecting said authentication message to determine whether authenticated operation of the first device should be provided. Subsequently, access to network resources or applications using the first device is allowed. The request sent by the first device might use wireless communication. The authentication message presented by the second device might be encoded as a Quick Response (QR) Code (RTM) that is captured by a camera of the first device. Encryption and encryption keys might be used to verify the authenticity of a request or the authentication message. The second device might be a wristwatch.</p> |
