A vehicle safety device (30) has a head (40) with cameras (43,44) with right and left side fields of view. The head (40) also has a high-visibility strip (46). The head (40) is driven between retracted and forward positions by a motor (60) driving a pinion ghear, in turn driving a rack (61,26). A support rod (56) provides support for the head (40) when extended. The device (30) is operated to extend the head (40) forwardly when a vehicle on which it is mounted is about to move onto a road. The head (40) is visible to drivers on the road due to the high-visibility strip (46),and the vehicles on the road are visible to the vehicles's driver due to feeds from the cameras (43,44) into an in-cab monitor (81). <Figure 1> |
