[Also in Division F2] A two-speed hand drill gearing comprises a pair of pinions 7, 10 carried by a sleeve 3 axially slidable on the spindle 1 for the alternative meshing of the pinions with spaced pinions 18, 25 on a shaft 16 coupled to the drive shaft 15 through a pinion 17. As shown pinion 10 is keyed to sleeve 3 while pinion 7 is free thereon, the pinions being urged together by spring discs 13 to form an overload slip coupling. The sleeve 3 is controlled by a pin 23 engaging a circumferential groove 24 in the sleeve and carried by a disc 22 rotatable by a knob 20. A similar arrangement may be used to vary the loading of the springs 13 to adjust the slip torque, Fig. 3 (not shown). In a second gear arrangement, Fig. 2 (not shown), the opposite faces of pinion 10 are engaged by slipping clutch balls (33, 35) which may be arranged to operate at different load torques according to the ratio in use.</p> |
