The present invention relates to a novel use of a protein hydrolysate and a peptide derived from a seahorse for preventing or treating neurodegenerative diseases and, more specifically, to a composition and health functional foods containing a seahorse protein hydrolysate or a peptide isolated and purified from the protein hydrolysate as an active ingredient for preventing or treating neurodegenerative diseases. The bioactive peptide derived from the seahorse protects brain cells from neurotoxic substances and oxidative stress and has an excellent anti-inflammatory effect by suppressing the expression of a inflammation mediator and increasing the expression of anti-inflammatory cytokines, and also suppresses the expression of cathepsin B and cathepsin D associated with the production of a neurotoxic substance Aβ42. Thus, the composition containing the bioactive peptide as an active ingredient in the present is very effective in preventing or treating/improving the neurodegenerative diseases through brain cell protective activity, oxidative stress relieving activity, anti-inflammatory activity, and protease inhibitory activity, thereby being useful as a functional pharmaceutical composition and a food composition.
