Provided are a segment cleaning method using a bitmap and a host device in which the method is applied. According to the present invention, the host device comprises: an interface which relays data communication with a storage device; and a file system module which identifies a live block included in a victim segment among a plurality of segments stored in the storage device by referring to a bitmap stored in the storage device, writes back the identified live block through the interface, and performs segment cleaning by recovering the victim segment into a free area. The bitmap is composed of bits indicating if a corresponding block is live or not, and one segment is composed of a plurality of blocks.
