The present invention discloses a composition for alleviating obesity and fatty liver using an extract of leaves of Sasa quelpaertensis Nakai or p-coumaric acid separated therefrom. The extract of Sasa quelpaertensis Nakai restrains the weight increase and the accumulation of fat, increases the manifestation content of adiponectin, and activates AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) in animal testing. In addition, the extract of Sasa quelpaertensis Nakai decreases the contents of glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT), glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH).
