A digital device and a method for performing a video call are disclosed. The digital device comprises: a selected area recognition unit for recognizing more than one among a shape and a location of a selected area using more than one among a recognition location and a trajectory of an indicator recognized to correspond to a user image display area where photographed image data provided by a camera unit is expressed; a synthesizing unit for generating synthesized image data by combining the photographed image data and alternative image data to express the alternative image data at one predetermined location among the inside and the outside of the recognized selected area, and the recognition location of the indicator; and a communication unit for transmitting the synthesized image data to the other party over the communication network in order to perform an video call function. According to the present invention, an area designated by a user from an image obtained by a camera is recognized, and an image which has been previously designated or selected by the user is synthesized, and the synthesized image is transmitted to the other party terminal, thereby protecting individual privacy.
