A pneumatic tyre comprising a radial cord carcass ply 3 and a bead reinforcing ply 5 of parallel cords inclined to the radial planes is characterized in that the ply 3 after being bent round a bead wire 4 terminates at a radial height h from the corresponding wheel rim flange 2a of from one twelfth to one quarter of the internal radial height H of the tyre and each bead reinforcing ply 5 extends radially from the base of the bead not more than h/2 from the flange 2a. The ply 5 may be bent round the bead wire (Fig. 2, not shown) and may lie between the ply 1 and the bead wire (Fig. 3, not shown). The cords are preferably metallic. |
