Disclosed are a method and device for determining a video foreground main image area, which relate to the field of image processing and increase the segmentation accuracy of a video foreground main image area. The particular solution comprises: in a previous frame image of a video, determining a foreground scope and a background scope; acquiring a motion vector and an amplification factor of a background scope of a next frame image with respect to the background scope of the previous frame image; obtaining a foreground scope in the next frame image according to the motion vector and the amplification factor of the next frame image with respect to the background scope of the previous frame image; calculating the difference of the gray-scale values between the foreground scope of the next frame image and the foreground scope of the previous frame image so as to obtain a grey-scale map of foreground motion edges; and obtaining a foreground main image area according to the grey-scale map of the foreground motion edges. The present invention is used for the segmentation of a foreground main image area in a video image.
