A communication system comprises: a plurality of slave units each of which acquires meter-reading data representative of a usage amount, in a demander's house, of media supplied from a provider; and a master unit that uses wired communications to acquire the meter-reading data from each slave unit. The communication system further comprises a portable terminal apparatus (maintenance terminal) that performs the transmissions/receptions of data to/from at least a first one of the plurality of communication apparatuses (the plurality of slave units and the master unit). When the portable terminal apparatus performs the transmissions/receptions of data to/from the first communication apparatus, a second communication apparatus, which is different from the first communication apparatus, uses a wired communication network, which is established among the plurality of communication apparatuses, to communicate with the first communication apparatus, and further, the second communication apparatus performs a wireless communication with the portable terminal apparatus. In this way, the second communication apparatus relays the transmissions/receptions of data between the portable terminal apparatus and the first communication apparatus. |
