N - -vinyl - N - alkyl - formamides of the general formula in which R 1 represents an alkyl group are prepared by a process wherein an N-(α-alkoxyethyl) compound of the general formula in which R 2 represents an alkyl group is heated in the presence of a weakly acidic (see below) oxide of aluminium, beryllium or zirconium, a weakly acidic phosphate of aluminium, calcium or boron, or a mono-, di- or tri-carboxylic acid or a hydroxy- or keto-carboxylic acid or a mixture of any two or more of the foregoing compounds at a temperature between 50‹ C. and 250‹ C. " Weakly acid " in the Specification means not sufficiently acidic to cause polymerization of the N-vinyl-formamides formed. Examples describe the production of N-vinyl- N - methyl - and N - vinyl - N - ethyl -formamide.</p> |
