A universal joint comprises a tyre-like flexible element 14 axially straddling and clamped to mounts 12 radially outwardly projecting from interdigitating sectorial fingers 10, 10<SP>1</SP> respectively axially extending from coupling members 6, 61 keyed to shafts 2, 2<SP>1</SP>. The element 14 comprises a reinforcing nylon or rayon web (16) between layers of laminated rubber or other similar natural or synthetic elastic material, and is vulcanized in a mould. The element is radially slit to facilitate assembly. As shown, the element 14 comprises an arcuate outer section (20), side walls 18, and axially extending beads (22). The web (16) is looped at its extremities (15). The clamping means comprises sectors 26 secured to the mounts 12 by screws 28. Recesses 30, 32 in the clamping sectors 26 accept the beads (22) and the walls (18). In Figs. 4 and 6 (not shown), the flexible element is provided also with axially extending flanges (40) to cover the outer peripheries of the clamping sectors 26.
