The present invention improves temporal resolution. An imaging element is provided with a pixel array unit and a control unit. The pixel array unit comprises a plurality of pixels that are sorted into two or more groups, and pixels belonging to the same group are driven using the same timing. The control unit sets the number of groups during a period of reading the electrical load to be the same number for any timing occurring during imaging operation, and controls the drive of the pixel array unit so that the number of groups during a period of exposure accumulation of the electrical load is set to be the same number for any timing occurring during imaging operation.
