A light guide plate (3) has such a configuration that light emitted from a light source (2) is incident thereon and a light emission surface (32) thereof emits light. A prism sheet (5) reflects light having a predetermined angle, among light emitted from the light emission surface (32), so as to cause the light to be incident on the light guide plate (3), and transmits light having other angles. A polarization control element (8) is provided between a 1/4 wavelength plate (12) and a reflection-type liquid crystal display element (1), so as to be parallel with the light emission surface (32). The polarization control element (8) separates the light emitted from the 1/4 wavelength plate (12) into a first polarization light that is light transmitted as illumination light to be incident on the reflection-type liquid crystal display element (1), and a second polarization light that is light reflected so as to be incident on the light guide plate (3), and reflects light that has been modulated and emitted by the reflection-type liquid crystal display element (1) so that the light is directed to an imaging lens (10). The imaging lens (10) allows the incidence light to go toward a combiner (21). |
