This transmission controller determines whether or not a specific shifting operation was performed for alternatingly switching the transmission mode between D-mode and R-mode by using a selection switch, and when determined that the specific shifting operation was performed, engages the forward clutch by supplying an ON-pressure piston chamber with an oil pressure lower than the locking pressure which locks the locking mechanism, when engaging the forward clutch.
