A synthetic resin composition comprises a water-swellable linear or cross-linked polymer having as essential monomeric ingredients (1) one or more alpha-beta dibasic acids or anhydrides; and (2) a vinyl alkyl ether in which the alkyl group has from 1 to 10 carbon atoms, and from 0 to 20 per cent by weight of the said monomers of another monoolefinically unsaturated compound copolymerizable with said monomers, and/or partial esters, partial amides or partial alkali metal or ammonium salts of said polymers and 8-hydroxy quinoline, which acts as a stabilizer when the polymer is dispersed in water to form a mucilage. The polymer may be cross-linked by incorporating a polyunsaturated cross-linking agent as an additional monomeric ingredient. The dibasic acid or anhydride may be maleic, chloromaleic, 2,3 - dichloromaleic, 2,3 - dicyanomaleic, 2,3-dimethyl maleic, 2,3-diphenyl maleic, 2,3-dibenzyl maleic, 2,3-di-(p-methylphenyl) maleic, 2,3-dicyclohexyl maleic, or 2-methyl-, 2-ethyl-, 2-cyano-, 2-propyl-, 2-phenyl-, 2-benzyl-, 2-(p-methylphenyl) or 2-cyclohexyl maleic anhydride or acids corresponding thereto. The vinyl alkyl ether may be vinyl methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl, hexyl, 2-ethyl hexyl or octyl ether. The other monoolefinically unsaturated compound may be styrene, acrylonitrile, vinyl or vinylidene chloride, vinyl acetate or benzoate, diethyl maleate, ethylene, isobutylene or acrylic acid. The cross-linking agent may be divinyl benzene, naphthalene or cyclohexane, a low molecular weight polybutadiene, hexaallyl trimethylene trisulphone, trimethacrylyl triazine, ethylene glycol diacrylate, allyl acrylate or cinnamate, diallyl maleate, phthalate or malonate, beta-styryl acrylic acid, acrylic or methcarylic anhydride, divinyl or diallyl ether, diallyl ethylene glycol ether, 1,4,5,8-naphthalene tetrol ethers, divinyl or diallyl ketone, allyl-beta-allyloxy propionate, allyl methacrylyl sucrose, monoallyl maleate, diallyl glycerol ether, polyallyl sucrose, glucose, sorbitol, mannitol, levulose, erythritol or pentaerythritol, or methylene-bis-methacrylamide. |
