A negative image of an original having IR- absorptive image areas is produced by contacting the original with a sheet coated with a composition comprising a heat-sensitive diazonium salt, exposing to IR radiation and developing in an alkaline enviroment in the presence of an azo coupler. The sheet may be coated with a solution containing an azo coupler, an acid stabiliser and the diazonium salt and developed with e. g. NH 3 vapour, or the azo coupler may be incorporated in a developing solution. The diazonium salt may be be a benzenediazonium fluoroborate, a tetrachlorozincate, a hexachlerostannate, a hydrogen sulphate, a 2, 4, 6-trimethylbenzene diazonium salt, or a p-ethoxy-carbaryl benzene diazonium salt. Specified couplers in the coating are sodium 6, 7 - dihydroxy - 2 naphthalene sulphonate and resorcinol. A specified developing solution contains KOH, resorcinol and phloroglucinol. Other alkaline agents disclosed are sodium borate, Na 2 CO 3 , NH 4 OH, and ethanolamine. The coating may be exposed through the original or through the supporting sheet, or may be reflex exposed.</p> |
