A system for triggering a specialized data collection mode of a vehicle event recorder comprises an input interface, a processor, and an output interface. The input interface is configured to receive a trigger indication from an external trigger source. The processor is configured to determine whether the trigger indication comprises an indication to enter into a specialized data collection mode and, in the event that the trigger indication comprises the indication to enter into the specialized data collection mode, to determine a vehicle event recorder associated with the trigger indication.
